Other Abstract

To clarify the effects of freeze-thaw cycles on saturated soil hydraulic conductivity (Ks) in the northern
Loess Plateau,the variation characteristics ofKs atdifferentsoildepths before and after freeze-thaw cycles under the
differentland uses were determ ined using the m ethod of the freeze-thaw cycles sim ulation.Results showed that the
freeze-thaw cycles had significanteffects on Ks.The values ofKs generally decreased after15 freeze-thaw cycles,and
the degree of the decrease varied with different land uses and soil depth. Ks at the soil depth of 0 - 10 cm
significantly decreased underthe fourland uses,and the degree ofthe decrease in Ks was the highestunderCaragana
korshinskii land,followed by cropland,alfalfa land,and fallow land,which m ay be related to the soildensity.Except
forfallow land,freeze-thaw cycles had no obvious effecton Ks underthe otherthree land uses atthe soildepths of10
- 20 and 20 - 40 cm .The field capacity and saturated soilwater contentatthe depth of0 - 10 cm decreased under
the fourland uses afterfreeze-thaw cycles,suggesting a reduction in soilporosity.The results could provide theoretical
basis for the revealofresponse m echanism s ofKs to freeze-thaw cycles,and for the efficientuse ofspring rains and
snow watersources in cold and arid regions.
